M3 Mokume Gane

Mokume Gane Mokume-Gane (pronounced Moe-koo-may Gah-nay) and literarily translates as “wood grained metal” originated in Japan in the 17th century as a mixed metal laminate with distinctive layered wood grain type patterns. This fascinating material was originally used to create spectacular decorations for Samurai Swords. "M3 Mokume Gane" is a modern interpretation of this ancient Japanese metal art. Today's engineers and scientists use these "Mokume" patterns and M3 technology to create the new "super composites" that are being used to build the future.

While the M3 proprietary process utilizes some very sophisticated equipment and scientific processes, the M3 Mokume wood grain patterns can only be produced by hand. Each blank is an individual work of art created by a master technician. The blanks are made to size in order to insure that the wood grain pattern is always in proportion and the “sweet spot” is just below the surface revealed by turning, carving or milling.

PURCHASE
Blanks & Billets
Rectangular Blanks are available in stock sizes from 5/8” x 5/8” x 3” up to 1-1/2” x 1-1/2” x 6”. M3 Mokume Blanks are designed for a single object to be produced utilizing a large percentage of the blank (consider Jewelry Billets for small objects). As such, the patterning is spread naturally throughout the full size of the blank. Unlike wood, the wood grain in M3 Mokume blanks is produced with the sweet spot or best pattern just under the surface of the blank which is revealed by carving, turning or milling. Every blank is guaranteed to have a great wood grain pattern with none of the problems associated with working wood grain. No worries about splitting, voids (blanks are cured under great heat and pressure) or grain direction. Unlike wood blanks, objects produced from M3 Mokume blanks will literally last forever.

Fine writing instruments, bottle stoppers, brush and razor handles are some of the products produced.

Knife Scales
All M3 Mokume, Damascus and Pattern Metals are now available as "Matched Sets" in "Face", "Side" and "Burl"(Swirly) grain patterns. These magnificent knife scales are available in stock sizes from 1-1/4” x 4” x 1/16 up to 1-1/2” x 6” x 3/8” (larger sizes by request) and three grain patterns; Face Grain, Side Grain and Burl. They are perfect for knife handles, gun grips, musical instrument inlays, pool cue inlays and many other creative applications. M3 can be cut by a CO2 Laser making inlays, custom branding and lettering both practical and affordable.

“Matching” allows a level of consistency to large editions produced with M3. All M3 patterns are random, but the various grain patterns will all share similarities even over a large number of parts. These scales are diamond sliced from precision sized M3 blocks to precise specifications allowing the faces of each scale to match as closely as possible. Only the best matches make it through our strict quality assurance inspections.

Jewelry Grade Billets
M3 jewelry grade billets are available in stock rectangular sizes 1” x 1” x 4” to 1.5” x 1.5” x 6” (other shapes and sizes upon request). Jewelry Billets are designed for many objects to be produced from a single blank. As such, the patterning is extremely tight in order to insure plenty of pattern in small pieces. Rings, wedding bands, earrings, broaches, watch cases, charms, cufflinks, tie bars, belt buckles and fine carvings are some of the items produced. M3 mass finishing system is available.

M3 Mokume is a perfect material for both men’s and women’s jewelry. M3 Mokume can be used as an inlay, cabochon or pendent and works great as a ring, wedding band or bracelet. We can produce near net shapes and sizes in Jewelry Grade Blanks or Billets that meet tight tolerances required for manufacturing. Our Jewelry billets are patterned with a much tighter Mokume pattern in order to produce small pieces with plenty of character. You can set gemstones into M3 or permanently bond M3 with any other material with good jewelers epoxy.

We have perfected the M3 process which allows for the re-alloying of metals. This proprietary process enables us to tint and or color the metal for the ultimate in custom design. Our Cobaltium, Blue Bronze and Red Copper are just a few stunning examples of this exciting technology. The colors and patterns run completely through the material. These are not surface applied anodizing or other chemical coloring that will scratch and wear off in time. M3 is truly heirloom quality material that will hold its finish and last for many generations.

M3 needs to be worked differently than traditional metals. M3 is a metal composite, the metal equivalent of engineered stone like Caesar Stone. You can’t forge, solder, roll or bend it around a mandrel. Instead rings and bracelets are turned on a lathe or cut from flat stock using standard wood working tools. The material is dense and stable and works well in a production environment. CNC mills and cutters will operate faster and require less frequent tooling changes drastically reducing production times. The material lends itself to mass finishing and we have perfected a two part polishing system that also reduces hand finishing labor.
